  1. Russia to that of the Basques, from that of Portugal to that of 
  2. Peru, are derivatives of the Graeco-Roman letters. Their unique 
  3. separation of sight and sound from semantic and verbal 
  4. content made them a most radical technology for the 
  5. translation and homogenization of cultures. All other forms of 
  6. writing had served merely one culture, and had served to 
  7. separate that culture from others. The phonetic letters alone 
  8. could be used to translate, albeit crudely, the sounds of any 
  9. language into one-and-the-same visual code. Today, the effort 
  10. of the Chinese to use our phonetic letters to translate their 
  11. language has run into special problems in the wide tonal 
  12. variations and meanings of similar sounds. This has led to the 
  13. practice of fragmenting Chinese monosyllables into 
  14. polysyllables in order to eliminate tonal ambiguity. The Western
